I referred to a report by the Road Traffic Management Corporation for an article I was writing for a client. It referred to information settlements along the freeway. It must have meant to say informal settlements. Whoever wrote this was asleep, did not know any better or just made an innocent mistake. Possibly, predictive text took over and nobody bothered to check.
This is the part that scares me. Nobody bothered to check. Proofreaders are a dying breed and yet their value is apparent. Now more than ever the quality of copy that comes out of newsrooms leaves much to be desired. I shudder at what I read this morning… and every day, week, month, year. News reporting is suffering.
